Naomh Crónán

Naomh Crónán is a 43-foot Galway Hooker, built true to traditional lines for ocean-going strength and regional utility. Its hull echoes the famous Morning Star hooker, with robust timbers and the distinctive black paint of its class.

Constructed in the 1990s by a passionate community group based in Clondalkin, West Dublin, Naomh Crónán was a rare achievement outside Galway—a full-size hooker built from local fundraising, volunteer labor, and the wish to revive Ireland’s traditional fleets. Originally based at Poolbeg Yacht Club in Ringsend, the boat became a feature of sailing life along Dublin’s coast, serving as a connection to western maritime traditions.

After decades serving Dublin’s waterways and educating youth and adults in heritage sailing, Naomh Crónán was gifted to Bádóirí an Chladaigh, symbolising a “passing of the torch” between Ireland’s east and west. The transfer in 2021 was celebrated as a bridge between communities that share an enduring love for the distinctive Hooker design.

At Malahide Shipyard, a full refit was undertaken—focus was placed on re-caulking the hull, refurbishing planking, repairing the transom, and updating rigging and sail hardware to ensure safety while maintaining authenticity. Expert shipwrights worked alongside volunteers from both Dublin and Galway, reflecting the cross-community bond. Modern upgrades included reinforced frames, new sails, and restoration of all timberwork and internal finishing, all using traditional materials like native oak and larch.

Now based in Galway, Naomh Crónán sails in heritage regattas, festivals, and training sessions, embodying both resilience and community spirit. She is a flagship asset for Bádóirí an Chladaigh, providing hands-on education, fostering seamanship, and uniting new generations with the folk-skill of sailing Hookers in the wild Atlantic bays.
