Meaircín Joe
Meaircín Joe is an authentic Galway Hooker originally constructed in 1987 on Mweenish Island, off the Connemara coast, by master boatbuilders the O’Clochartaigh brothers, Meaircín and Joe. Mweenish itself is renowned for its tradition of building and repairing Galway Hookers, with local families passing on skills through generations, each vessel bearing unique stories and craftsmanship traits.
After years of sailing and storied ownership, Meaircín Joe was entrusted to Bádóirí an Chladaigh for restoration. The permission came from the Linsey family in Dublin, recognizing the importance of returning her to the heart of Galway’s maritime revival. Restoration was overseen by famed craftsman Joe Joyce, whose expertise ensured that every plank, fitting, and detail was faithful to tradition while updated for safety and longevity.
Restoration required careful assessment of the hull, replacement of aged timbers, re-caulking, and a full re-rigging of the sails. Special attention was paid to sourcing appropriate materials—native oak and larch—maintaining historic authenticity. The project also received generous backing from The Kings Head Bar in Galway and the Grealish family, along with support from Galway City Council, Cold Chon, Selos, and Galway City Partnership.

Support Meaircín Joe
Meaircín Joe’s restoration is much more than a technical achievement. It signals Bádóirí an Chladaigh’s commitment to connecting the Claddagh with the greater Galway Bay region, making the fleet representative of both urban and rural maritime history. Her journey, from rural origins in Connemara to the renewed life in the Claddagh Basin, embodies the flow of heritage and skills across the west of Ireland.
Meaircín Joe was relaunched with fanfare a long walk festivity, live music, and even dolphins joining the celebration in Galway waters. The occasion underscored her role as a “fantastic asset to the city,” joining the growing fleet of restored Hookers now visible at regattas, festivals, and community sailing days.
The restoration of Meaircín Joe is a proud milestone, yet ongoing care is essential. Maintaining the hull, sails, and fittings, and integrating her fully into education and youth training requires continued backing volunteers, donations, and partnerships. Supporting Meaircín Joe isn’t just about one boat; it’s about keeping the flame of Irish maritime heritage alive for present and future generations.
With her story, Meaircín Joe links Mweenish, Galway City, and the broader community, reminding all who see her on the water of the enduring power of tradition and collaboration.
